Confirm your Election – Sermon Notes
St. Peter said one ought to be “diligent to confirm your calling and election” in 2 Peter 1:10
“Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall” – 2 Peter 1:10
The Apostle Paul said one ought to “examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith” in 2 Corinthians 13:5.
“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you–unless, of course, you fail the test?” – 2 Cor 13:5
Paul also said
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” – Phil 2:12-13
Being willing to “examine” ones actions, “work out” ones salvation, and “confirm” ones election is a monumental step towards spiritual maturity. For if one is found to be lacking in an area, they now have the opportunity to address their weaknesses and overcome them by the help of the Holy Spirit.
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” – 2 Peter 1:3-11
You confirm your calling, your election, your salvation, by having observable acts of love in your life! Is love present in your heart for others? Is that love being put into action for others? This is the only way one may confirm their claim to Christianity.
Peter used the phrase “practice these qualities.” John the Baptist used the phrase “produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”
“ Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.” – Luke 3:8-14
Jesus said John showed us the way of righteousness.
“For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.” – Matthew 21:32
Ultimately the message coming from Jesus, John the Baptist, Peter, Paul and from all of the Saints was to LOVE. Have love for your neighbors. This confirms your election.
The opposite is also true, hearing Jesus’ message to love neighbors and NOT doing it, confirms your destruction.
“By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” – Matthew 7:16-23
““Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”” – Luke 6:46-49
So how do we know what true Christ like, Gospel driven love is?
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” – 1 John 3:16-18
Living in and walking in this kind of love is pure and undefiled, Jesus is truly your Lord religion.
“ Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” – James 1:22-25, 27
How can we confirm our election? Examine yourself, examine your actions, and if you find acts of love for your neighbors and that love is increasing, your election is confirmed. If you do not find acts of love for your neighbors or your love is decreasing, repent and return to love. God is love and His Holy Spirit helps to guide us into loving like He does. Trust and obey him, love your neighbors, and your election will be confirmed.
